10 Magical Mermaid Cakes

September 10, 2017

Picture it, Australia, 1989. Little Girls and Boys everywhere, watching ‘The Little Mermaid” for the first time.

Minds were blown. Outfits were created. Unrealistic expectations of ‘Surf hair’ were born. And no one, NO ONE ever got out of the pool normally again!

Flash forward to 2017, and the Mermaid craze is back full force. And I could not be more excited.

I had the very great pleasure to create a 100% Buttercream Mermaid inspired cake Tutorial for American Cake Decorating and to celebrate, I wanted to share some of my favourite Buttercream Mermaid Cakes and Cupcakes!

Check out these babies for inspiration, if you know, you wanna be ‘part of this world’. See what I did there..

How stunning is this Metallic beauty from Baking Bro! The combination of Buttercream, wafer paper, and metallic topper creates such an elegant design.

This all Buttercream Artwork, from the always incredible Ivenoven, is an awesome example of possibilities of Buttercream!

My inner 8 year old is freaking all the way out! I want this cake then, and I want it now! Awesomely created by Gaby’s Sweetness.

Its pastel, there’s a tail, bubbles, and Buttercream. I just wanna hug it. And then eat it. Truly beautiful work from Star Bird Bakehouse.

Squeeee!! Mermaid Cupcakes!!! Sparkly awesomeness from The Cake Mamas.

Ombré simplicity just melting my heart! Love this from Sweet Pea Tailored Confections.

EDS can cause a whole bunch of digestive related i EDS can cause a whole bunch of digestive related issues, including reflux, gastro paresis, constipation, and my personal favourite, severe pain with no obvious cause.
My goal this #edsawarenessmonth is to shine a light on the symptoms of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, because there’s NO WAY it’s as rare as doctors think it this.
If you have hyper mobile joints and digestive symptoms that cannot be explained, Google EDS and speak to your doctor, or to a doctor that listens ❤️🦓 #eds
[ID: EDS Fact number 17, people with hypermobility are often faced with digestive problems. Our stomachs are often stretchy so food can stay in there too long. This is called delayed gastric emptying, which can make us feel full very quickly. It can also increase the risk of reflux. Autonomic problems can also effect digestion]

Here’s something I’ve learned about chronic il Here’s something I’ve learned about chronic illness and disability. No two days are the same. No two PEOPLE are the same.
Thursday and Friday of this week I wasn’t doing well. I’d had about 2 weeks of migraine or low level headaches, lots of joint pain, nausea, I tripped over and bruised up my knee (which also threw out my lower back), basically I was sad. Zero stars. Do not recommend.
Today, I have only a bare minimum headache. No major joint pain, and I’m able to do some light gardening with the help of my 3D printed finger splints (BIG thanks to my husband).
I wouldn’t have believed on Friday that I would feel this good on Sunday. And likely next week I’ll have a day where I couldn’t believe how good I felt on Sunday. Each day is it’s own challenge and blessing.
I also don’t have it as bad as some of the wonderful Zebras I’ve seen sharing their stories for #edsawarenessmonth. I’ve had no surgeries for EDS, and I don’t currently need any supports to get around. That doesn’t make my experience any less valid, or hard to take.
This is something I’ve seen over the years as someone chronically ill, and especially as a parent of children with special needs. There seems to be this duality of everything’s fine I don’t need help, and a sense of ‘proving’ that you have it bad.
If you need to hear this today, let me be the one to tell you, you don’t have to suffer, with anything, you can and SHOULD ask for help.
You also don’t have to prove that your experience or struggle is valid.
Regrettably there is plenty of grief and pain to go around, so please don’t feel like you have anything to prove. The people that truly love you will understand, even if they don’t truly understand ❤️🦓 #ehlersdanlossyndrome #differentaidsfordifferentdays #specialneedsparent #chronicillness #yougotthis

Big oof on this one. If I had a dollar for every Big oof on this one.
If I had a dollar for every time a doctor spoke to me like I was an idiot, I could afford to buy the stainless steel finger joint supports that I have to order from the US because there are no EDS/Arthritis finger supports available in this country because what disease?!
Do NOT feel shame for research. Do not feel like your own health is someone else’s business.
Doctors are human, there’s no way doctors can know everything about every condition, that’s WHY we have specialists. What we NEED is doctors willing to admit they do t have all the answers, and that the lack of answers doesn’t mean there’s nothing there 🦓
